Ambassador T. S. Tirumurti is a distinguished diplomat and former Indian Foreign Service officer whose diplomatic career spanned 37 years between 1985 and 2022. He served as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations in New York from 2020 to 2022 and was President of the UN Security Council in August 2021.
During his tenure at the United Nations, he chaired three Security Council committees, including the Counter-Terrorism Committee, Taliban Sanctions Committee and Libya Sanctions Committee. Prior to this, he served as Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs from 2018 to 2020, overseeing Arab countries and Africa, as well as development partnership and economic relations. He also served as India’s Sherpa for BRICS and as Director of EximBank of India.
His diplomatic postings included Cairo, Geneva, Gaza, Washington D.C. and Jakarta, and he served as India’s High Commissioner to Malaysia from 2013 to 2018. He was also India’s first Representative to the Palestinian Authority in Gaza between 1996 and 1998.
Ambassador Tirumurti is currently Distinguished Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras and serves on the Board of Governors of Dhirubhai Ambani University, Gandhinagar. He is the author of three books and writes extensively on contemporary foreign policy issues.
